In 2002, the National Youth Gang Survey noted 731,500 individuals were active in 21,500 gangs. Moreover, gang presence was found in all United States communities with 250,000 or more citizens. Because the average age of gang entry is twelve years of age, this is a pertinent issue for mental health professionals who work with children, adolescents, and families. In this Clinical Case Conference, attendees acquire knowledge of the current literature delineating the biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors associated with gang membership. The participants have the opportunity to discuss how their clinical experiences relate to case and media material presented. By attending this program, attendees learn about novel interventions for this patient population that can be incorporated into their clinical practice.
