Through review of literature pertaining to attachment, acculturation, and intergenerational conflict in a biracial population such as Asian Americans, it is clear that a multitude of factors play into the unique presentation of a child or adolescent in this group. Many issues come into play when treating a patient in this Asian American population, which are highlighted in The Joy Luck Club, and can greatly affect the psychiatric outcome. It is with understanding of these unique issues that child and adolescent psychiatrists can be successful in their treatment of Asian American patients.
