A true story, the documentary film If I Could follows the life of Tracy, a young woman facing the ghosts of her troubled past in a fight to keep her son from falling prey to the same demons that almost destroyed her. This portrait of a struggling single mom addresses some of the most troubling and crucial issues facing American families today. These themes are woven together in an unusual and compelling journey of one American family’s attempt to escape the long-term effects of trauma after decades of abuse, abandonment, drugs, and rage. The documentary is followed by interactive dialogue between a 4-member panel, composed of two child and adolescent psychiatrists; the filmmaker herself; and a psychiatrist who is a nationally recognized expert on patient privacy rights. They discuss relevant clinical, social, and policy issues that are raised by the documentary.
