Workshop 8 (sold out)
Limit Setting in Clinical Practice: Effective Strategies to Empower Parents

Temper tantrums, non-compliance, and defiance are common responses to parental injunctions of “no”. Every day, the clinical work of child and adolescent psychiatry involves working with parents who often feel overwhelmed in attempting to elicit their child’s compliance. In this Workshop, attendees identify the common causes of ineffective limit setting. There is also a brief review of the effective utilization of behavioral techniques such as natural/logical consequences as a component of limit setting. Attendees also learn to identify factors internal to parents, their psychological functioning, and factors external to parents, their marital/relationship functioning, which may complicate effective limit setting.
