Child and adolescent psychiatrists in outpatient clinical practice are frequently asked to evaluate children with developmental delays and “odd” social behaviors. Psychiatric evaluation may confirm symptoms that are consistent with diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders (ASD's); however, due to lack of experience or training clinicians are often uncertain about how to proceed with the evaluation. Most are practicing in solo or group practices rather than multidisciplinary settings where the child with autism spectrum could be evaluated more comprehensively. In addition, the rapid expansion of basic science research in autism has provided additional information that may have clinical or diagnostic implications. This Institute provides practicing child and adolescent psychiatrists and other clinicians with working knowledge of basic science research advances and fundamental information on how to help parents and other caregivers immediately after their child is diagnosed or suspected to have an ASD. Plan to attend this Institute to learn how to develop an appropriate multi-modal treatment plan encompassing emotional and educational support for the parents, siblings, and other caregivers appropriate work up to clarify the diagnosis, and clinical implications of recent research advances in ASD.
