Dr. Shaffer is Irving Philips Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at Columbia University. He is the Principal Investigator on the NIMH funded Advanced Center for Intervention and Services Research and has been the Director of Training on the NIMH funded Research Training Program in Child Psychiatry for over 20 years. He is a member of the APA's DSM-V Child and Adolescent Disorder and the Mood Disorder Working Groups. He is current Chairman of the AACAP's Work Group on Research. His research has focused on diagnostic assessment, classification, and most particularly on adolescent suicide, suicide attempts, and suicide ideation. He has a particular interest in the assessment of episodic thoughts, moods, and behaviors such as occur in adolescent suicidality and in non-suicidal self injury.
