Town Meeting: Considering Developmental Aspects of Nosology: An Update on DSM-V

Major changes occurred in psychiatric nosology following research advances through the 1970s. These changes culminated in the publication in 1980 of DSM-III, which was followed over the next 14 years by two revisions, first DSM-III-R and then DSM-IV, published in 1994. However, since 1994, no major revision has occurred in the DSM. In the late 1990’s, the American Psychiatric Association began the process of considering revisions for DSM-V. Currently, this process has developed to the point where discussion with the broader mental health community is needed, including specifically with both scientists and practitioners. The 2008 Town Meeting is designed to provide a context for such discussions as well as an avenue whereby open discussion of possible changes to the DSM might occur. Of particular relevance to AACAP members, initial deliberations aimed at generating DSM-V suggest that the treatment of developmental disorders could be significantly affected. These changes are designed to call greater attention to development in DSM-V, relative to DSM-IV. The Town Meeting provides an important avenue in which these potential changes can be communicated and discussed.
