Presidential Interview

Robert L. Hendren, D.O., M.D., AACAP President, interviews Ira S. Lourie, M.D.

 

Dr. Lourie is a child psychiatrist who currently is a partner in the Human Service Collaborative, an organization that provides consultation, technical assistance, and training in areas of human service policy and service system development. He is Medical Director of two community-based agencies for troubled children, Pressley Ridge Maryland and AWARE of Anaconda, Montana; he is also a psychiatric consultant for the Villa Maria Consortium.

From 1973 to 1991, Dr. Lourie worked at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) where he was instrumental in the development and administration of the Child and Adolescent Service System Program (CASSP). Prior to his work on CASSP, he focused on the development of services for abused and neglected adolescents. From 1981 to 1983, he was on loan from the NIMH to the State of Maryland where he served as Medical Director of RICA-Rockville a state-run residential treatment center for children and adolescents with severe emotional disturbance.

He is assistant clinical professor of Child Psychiatry at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and a past member of the AACAP’s Task Force on Systems of Care for Seriously Emotionally Disturbed Children. Dr. Lourie is a Past-President of the American Orthopsychiatric Association. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Families for Child Mental Health and of the Board of Trustees for the Council on Accreditation. Among the many honors he has received are the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Conference on WrapAround Services, the Outstanding Service Medal from the U.S. Public Health Service for his pioneering work on behalf of abused and neglected adolescents, the Gwen Iding Lectureship from the Research and Training Center for Children’s Mental Health at the University of South Florida, the Making a Difference Award from the Federation of Families for Child Mental Health, and the Tipper Gore “Remember the Children Award” from the National Mental Health Association. Dr. Lourie’s new book written with Karl Dennis, M.D., Everything is Normal Until Proven Otherwise: A Book about Wraparound, has recently been published by the Child Welfare League of America.
