Substance use disorders remain among the most feared outcomes in adolescents. Growing evidence suggests that psychiatric disorders commonly co-occur with substance use disorders in youth. In this Institute, a comprehensive overview of the major psychiatric disorders in context to cigarette smoking and substance use disorders is presented. Particular attention is paid to the co-occurrence of substance abuse and ADHD, conduct, anxiety, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, depression, and bipolar disorder. Empirically-based data is linked with systematic clinical observation in elucidating the presentation, epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment strategies of adolescents with comorbid psychopathology and substance use disorders.
