Conflicts of Interest: Guidelines for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Practitioners

The present state of scrutiny of conflicts of interests from the public, media, and our patients has lead child and adolescent psychiatrists to be at the forefront of a transition in the practice of medicine. It is important for child and adolescent psychiatrists to understand what a conflict of interest is and how to manage a conflict of interest when one arises. In this Member Forum, the process for developing the new AACAP conflict of interest guidelines for child and adolescent psychiatry practitioners is shared and discussed to provide an overview of the guidelines while exploring the specific challenges involved in managing conflicts of interest as a practicing child and adolescent psychiatrist. Strategies are discussed for aiding child and adolescent psychiatrists in following the four A’s of managing conflicts of interest–Awareness, Assessment, Acknowledgement, and Action.
