This Workshop provides attendees with sufficient understanding of public school law to effectively advocate for their patients' needs in the school setting. It focuses on a historical overview of public school law clarifying its origins in regular education law, civil rights law, and disability law and its evolution from these origins to existing working guidelines for students with special education needs. Today's legal framework is discussed from the perspectives of an attorney specializing in public school law, a school psychologist specializing in learning disorders, a director of exceptional education for a large public school system, and a child and adolescent psychiatrist. Attendees gain a clearer understanding of public school law relevant to their patients' needs. The interface of legal, administrative, and clinical perspectives is highlighted, enhancing participants' abilities to effectively collaborate with school officials to optimally meet the needs of their patients in the school setting.
