My Son the Fanatic takes place in a small city in England, where a Pakistani immigrant, named Parvez, works long hours driving a cab to provide support for his wife, Minoo, and find better opportunities for his beloved son, Farid. He is filled with pride when his son becomes engaged to the daughter of the city’s white police commissioner. When Farid breaks off his engagement, drops out of university and joins a group of Islamic fundamentalists, Parvez hopes to persuade his son to come around to his own liberal, assimilationist views. After his son convinces him to let a visiting holy man move into the family home, the conflicts between father and son become intensified as the contrast in values is heightened. This Media Theatre focuses on the dilemma faced by Muslim South Asian youth during the process of identity formation, the challenges faced by immigrant South Asian parents in trying to communicate and help their children, and the reasons behind moderate Muslim families rearing children of extremist views.
