Evidence supporting family-based interventions has accumulated over the years. Effective family therapy techniques and practice elements have been available for decades. AACAP recently published the Practice Parameter for Family Assessment and is currently developing the Practice Parameter for Family Intervention. This Workshop directs child and adolescent psychiatrists in the integration and adaptation of family therapy techniques into their busy practices. The presenters detail the evolution of family therapy techniques and demonstrate their adaptation to the demands of contemporary psychiatric practice. The “triangulation scale,” and the identification and management of “the homeostatic maintainer” are presented as readily accessible techniques for assessment and treatment of common child and adolescent psychiatric conditions and utilization of these techniques in programs in New Zealand and Hawai'i is reviewed.
