Clinical Case Conference 3 (open)
Fork in the Road: A Comparison of Two Methods to Address Gang Youth

The widespread nature of the gang population requires that clinicians develop a better understanding of gangs. Many gang-involved youth have had contact with the juvenile justice system. There have been several studies that have found that the rates of mental and emotional problems are increased in youth who have had contact with the justice system. Many of these same youth also have demonstrated problems in schools and in the community. These factors place them at increased risk for affiliating with and/or joining gangs. Many of these youth are likely to end up under the care of a child and adolescent psychiatrist because they have been referred by another child serving agency. This Clinical Case Conference emphasizes developing partnerships between child and adolescent psychiatrists and public, private, and community entities to combat gang involvement by children and adolescents. Model programs that have been developed throughout the U.S. are presented and the strengths and weaknesses of each of these programs are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role that mental health professionals can play in these efforts.
