Exposure to traumatic events is both common and associated with increased risk for psychiatric disorders. The prevalence of youth who have a history of trauma exposure is especially high amongst those adjudicated delinquents residing in residential care facilities. The history of delinquency and of trauma exposure increases the likelihood of psychiatric morbidity into adulthood and continued involvement with the criminal justice system. Yet there are many barriers to accessing appropriate and evidence-based services for these youth, including a bias against participating in treatment from the youth's perspective and broader systems-based issues such as reimbursement and availability of providers. This Clinical Consultation Breakfast provides an opportunity for psychiatrists, especially those who work with youth in juvenile justice, to overcome these barriers and advocate effectively for the youth in their care. The breakfast focuses on both improved commitment on the part of clinicians and systematic and innovative advocacy.
