Dr. Carlson is a Professor of Psychiatry and and Pediatrics and Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. She specializes in childhood psychopathology and psychopharmacology in general, and the subjects of childhood and adolescent depression and bipolar disorder, specifically. She has written over 180 papers and chapters and two books on those subjects. Her research interests include the phenomenology and long term follow up of young people with bipolar disorder, and the relationship of behavior disorders, developmental disorders, and mood disorders. In this Clinical Consultation Breakfast, Dr. Carlson makes the point that there are a significant number of children who don’t fit into our current nosology. It is important to have a nosology that fits the children’s cognitive, linguistic, and emotional symptoms, and longitudinal course rather than putting children into preconceived conditions that fit adults.
