The Round Table on Diversity and Culture this year focuses on updating and refining the Committee on Diversity and Culture’s curriculum on cultural competence. We specifically discuss IMG training issues. As 40% of child and adolescent trainees are IMGs, the 2009 Round Table talks about IMGs’ cultural educational needs (training, supervision, mentoring), cultural boundary issues, and cultural transference issues. Child psychiatry residency directors (or their designees) and faculty educators in diversity and culture have an opportunity to discuss these topics in the scope of the curriculum. Feedback is used to shape the final recommendations and also provides a stimulating discussion on educating emerging child and adolescent psychiatrists about best serving the populations that will shortly comprise the majority of the children in their practices.
