Karl Menninger, M.D. Plenary: Project AACAP: A Plan for the Coming Decade

After obtaining his B.A. from Columbia University in 1963, and his M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Dr. Greenhill served a one year internship in Pediatrics at Jacobi Hospital. He then became a research associate working in the NIMH Lab of Psychology at the Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD. In 1975, he was awarded an NIMH Research Career Development Award in the psychopharmacology of child disorders. He studied the psycho-neuro-endrocinological responses of children with ADHD to psychostimulants. He has published on the effect of stimulant medication upon the growth hormone and prolactin secretion. He continued his career with funded research investigating the dose equivalency and efficacy of sustained release methylphenidate; the efficacy of molindone in the treatment of inpatient children with conduct disorder; familial pathways in offspring of adult suicide attempters; the effects of age on the cardiovascular responses to tricyclic antidepressants; and the efficacy of multimodal treatments in school age children with ADHD. Dr. Greenhill is the author of over 120 published articles and has edited three books.

During his inaugural address, Dr. Greenhill presents his presidential initiative, Project AACAP. In recent years, AACAP has experienced considerable growth in both the size of its membership and the range of its activities, and now faces a critical need to prepare for a radically changing economic and regulatory environment. As the core of his presidential initiative, the AACAP leadership plans to strengthen our organization and by increasing AACAP’s relevance so membership becomes an even more important part of a member’s professional career. He explains why it is important for our leadership, staff, and all members to come together on a few measurable objectives that Council can use to monitor our success in these areas.
