Clinical Practicum: Improving Care for Youth with Severe Emotional and Behavioral Disturbance: Lessons From a State/University Collaboration

This Clinical Practicum focuses on Hawai’i’s systems of care. Using a case-based model, participants gain an understanding of coordinated referral, diagnosis, treatment, and aftercare services for youth in a statewide mental health system. The practicum describes effective clinical interventions and programs highlighting best practices, evidence-based treatment algorithms, trauma informed care, and multi-agency coordination of care (University of Hawai’i Department of Psychiatry; State of Hawai’i Department of Health, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division (CAMHD); State of Hawai’i Department of Education; Family Court/Juvenile Justice; Department of Human Service/Child Protective Services; Developmental Disabilities Division, and others).

At the end of this practicum, the participant has a greater understanding of the complex diagnostic and treatment issues for youth with severe emotional and behavioral disturbances and strategies that can lead to improved clinical and functional outcomes and better transitions into the community with the least restrictive levels of care through a multi-agency collaboration.

Follow the test case of a CAMHD youth who goes into crisis on the Big Island, is assessed with crisis intervention services, transported to Queens Family Treatment Center, and transitions back to Big Island Family Guidance Center.

This program is only available to AACAP members.
