Depression Education: A New Approach to Preventing Teen Suicide

More Than Sad: Teen Depression is aimed at teenagers 14 – 18 years old. The film focuses exclusively on the recognition and treatment of depression and references suicide only as an outcome of untreated depression. Key messages of the film include how to identify the symptoms of depression in oneself and in one’s peers, that major depression is a medical illness that requires and responds to treatment like any other illness, and that treatment is not something to be feared. MTS: Teen Depression gives viewers a window into the characters’ therapy sessions, illustrating the positive outcomes resulting from psychotherapy and, in some cases, medication. A major strength of the film is its portrayal of the different “faces” of depression - each character displays varying symptoms of the disorder. To cover the broad scope of challenges that students who are depressed typically face, each student serves as a prototype and is referred to treatment in a different manner – by a parent, by self-referral, by a school counselor, and by a physician.
