Children in the United States with an exposure to trauma are common, with more than 60 percent of children reporting exposure to a least one traumatic event, a third reporting multiple traumas. Exposure to trauma places children at increased risk of developing pediatric, educational, and psychiatric problems. When traumatized children receive mental health services, it is commonly in a wide spectrum of settings including community mental health clinics, pediatric services, schools, child welfare and foster care systems, juvenile justice systems, and residential treatment centers. It is important that these services result in comprehensive care for the child and adolescent. This Institute describes evidence-based practices and integrated services for traumatized children and adolescents across systems of care; and explores what treatments work best, the use of cognitive behavioral therapy in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the role of medication management. Attendees not only receive clinically focused training in evidence-based practices for assessment and treatment of traumatized children and adolescents, they participate in an open panel discussion with the presenters about integrating care across service settings.
