Over the past decade there has been a steady increase in the complexity and severity of problems faced by college students. Whatever the reasons for this increase, it has placed a higher demand of time and expertise on those involved in treating this population. This SIG explores the role and value of the child and adolescent psychiatrist, whose specialized knowledge makes them well positioned to provide both direct care to transitioning patients and their families and to provide psychiatric consultation to college mental health settings. Presentations cover significant issues unique to this college population, including the challenges of living away from home, accommodations for learning disabilities, stigma, legal constraints affecting communications between concerned parties, the impact of finances on care, and handling the potentially dangerous student. Participants learn about approaches that can prevent or reduce the stress of the college experience and how to implement them.
