This Workshop focuses on broadening the understanding of Asperger’s Disorder through a discussion of diagnostic criteria, behavioral assessment and interventions, educational strategies, and social skills/competence training. Best practice models are presented and their use in school and community settings discussed. Case examples and videotapes are used as the basis for discussion. Topics include social impairment and clumsiness in nonverbal communication, social isolation, difficulty sensing feelings, infringing on other’s space, excellent rote memory, and strength in decoding. Participants learn to conduct a Functional Behavior Assessment, identify best practice approaches to treatment, construct outcome measures to determine efficacy of interventions, and design individualized behavior support plans that provide alternatives to restrictive care.
