Since 1996, the rules of confidentiality were codified by the U.S. Government. The Health Insurance Portability and Privacy Act (HIPPA) set a national standard for the retention, control, security, and release of personal healthcare information. This Member Services Forum provides an insightful look into the problems of patient confidentiality in the current environment and provides information to assist child and adolescent psychiatrists to avoid the legal and regulatory consequences of failure to fully comply. A panel of individuals with their own perspective and expertise provide information in the form of an integrated discussion covering various topics such as: electronic retention, dissemination, security, and management of patient records. Attendees take away an enhanced perspective of the current state of confidentiality in all its forms. They receive information to help process the evolving ethical and legal requirements that are becoming all too contradictory in the 21
st century.
