When attempting to sort through the wide spectrum of services offered under the category “residential treatment centers,” many find it difficult to identify reliable resources of information about appropriate placement options for their patients. This Workshop is designed to help child and adolescent psychiatrists better understand the spectrum of residential treatment currently available in the United States. Specific issues covered include understanding which patients may benefit from residential treatment, a review of the current evidence base regarding outcomes of residential treatment, understanding the use of the Collaborative Problem Solving treatment model in reducing the need for restraint and seclusion in the residential setting, and pharmacologic approaches used in residential treatment.
