An estimated 7 million Muslims of varying ethnic origins are living in the United States. As the challenges for Muslin youth increase, mental health practitioners need to acquaint themselves with the religious and cultural traditions of this population to better address their mental health needs. Yet, there is a lack of pediatric psychiatry literature on Muslim culture, child-rearing practices, and help-seeking behaviors. This Workshop increases awareness of unique characteristics of different Muslim groups, specifically in the context of identity formation for the Muslim child. A clinical management and treatment model is presented that facilitates therapeutic encounters with the Muslim patient and their family. Participants can use their understanding of the religious traditions of the Muslim patient for effective clinical assessment and management.
