A systems of care model is an important part of a public health system and is increasingly embraced by communities around the United States. At the present time, involvement in systems of care is still a relatively new idea for many child and adolescent psychiatrists, and there remain challenges to meaningful psychiatric involvement. Yet, new opportunities are emerging, which include the child and adolescent psychiatrist as an active member of the child and family team, a consultant to the team, an informal resource to the team, and an advocate for child and family. This CCB explores the history of the systems of care model; and the important role child and adolescent psychiatrists can serve in facilitating communication between various agencies and promoting recovery by serving as diagnosticians, consultants, treatment providers, and advocates. Challenging clinical cases demonstrate the benefits of individualized treatment plans that make use of systems of care concepts. Attendees gain a better understanding of systems of care, its challenges and successes, and the role child and adolescent psychiatrists can play.
