Dr. O’Brien shares knowledge gleaned from direct individual work with victims; group work with victims and their mothers; and supervision of numerous trainees, national and international, as they treated victims using individual psychotherapy. Discussion covers prominent themes that recur in treating and working with sexually abused adolescents, including: 1) the extent of the abuse is rarely fully revealed initially; 2) the anger and confusion around the victimization is first directed at the perpetrator, then at those who could or should have protected the victim; and 3) the various, intense emotions that occur throughout treatment, e.g., anger, disgust, excitement, and even pleasure. Pitfalls in treatment and establishing trust also are discussed. Attendees are encouraged to share their own cases and issues in working with adolescent sexual abuse victims for discussion.
