Multiple studies in adult and pediatric psychiatric disorders have shown non-compliance and poor adherence to medication as major obstacles in treatment, leading to recurrence of symptoms and, often, re-hospitalizations. A poor understanding and misconceptions about illness and the need for medications contribute to noncompliance. This CCB addresses several strategies to enhance medication adherence, including psychoeducation as an essential part of treatment, particularly with psychopharmacology treatment, so patients and families understand how the medications work in relation to the illness; cognitive skill training and cognitive behavioral interventions that focus on the patient’s beliefs and attitudes; recognition that the therapeutic relationship is of vital importance in engagement and maintenance of treatment; and how family interventions and self-help groups may enhance adherence. Attendees learn about an educational program designed to promote recognition and management of non-adherence in outpatient settings.
