The Healthcare Access and Economics Committee explores the most effective use of the American Medical Association’s Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Manual and provides current information regarding the new CPT codes for psychiatry. Since Medicaid, Medicare, managed care, and indemnity insurance all rely on CPT 2011 for billing and reimbursement, child and adolescent psychiatrists must be familiar with this gold-standard, procedure-coding system. Following an overview of the CPT Manual and its history, material from the recently updated AACAP CPT module is presented. The Medicare payment systems, fraud and abuse rules, evaluation and management codes, psychiatry codes, selected non-psychiatry codes, and the current status of the new CPT codes for psychiatry are covered. Clinical vignettes are used to describe coding options, with their merits and drawbacks. Participants are encouraged to ask questions about how to code services they provide.
