Committee Meeting (open)
AACAP Diversity and Culture Round Table

International Medical Graduates (IMGs) comprise approximately 30% of all U.S. child and adolescent psychiatrists. In addition to negotiating acculturation and immigration issues, they may have to overcome language and communication barriers, discrimination, and prejudice. On the other hand, due to their dualistic cultural identity and an array of professionally relevant, comparative experiences, they are in a unique position to contribute to the advancement of psychiatric concepts in an era of cultural diversity and often global focus. They may provide an important liaison between the U.S. and the rest of the world, functioning as cultural ambassadors between American psychiatry and international psychiatry. It is imperative that we, at AACAP, respond to the call to discuss the specific issues pertaining to IMGs and take the initiative to officially address their needs to maintain their professional esteem and identity. This may include, but is not limited to, provision of quality education, advocacy, training of teachers and mentors, and a platform in organized child psychiatry. The Round Table discusses how residency programs, as well as AACAP, can better address the unique issues surrounding IMGs. The possible role of an IMG Caucus in AACAP is also discussed. If interested in attending, please email Jennifer Medicus at jmedicus@aacap.org.
