Involving parents early in a child’s mental health treatment is important so they can participant in and understand their child’s treatment. This CCB describes methods of engaging parents in the psychological treatments of their children. It also demonstrates that such engagement often requires an appreciation for and response to the psychological situation of the parent. Common emotional reactions of parents to their child’s psychiatric difficulty and ways of approaching some of these reactions are discussed. Participants are encouraged to bring clinical material from their practices for discussion.
