Deaf Mental Health: The Research, Clinical Implications, and Importance of Cross-Cultural Sensitivity
There are many challenges facing patients, families, and communities with regard to accessing appropriate mental health services for the deaf throughout the United States. This Workshop educates child and adolescent psychiatrists about the deaf culture and the importance of American Sign Language, explores the mental health needs of deaf and hard of hearing youth, provides practical guidelines on optimal service delivery, including utilizing current technology, to meet the unique needs of this population, and stimulates discussion on how best to coordinate services and develop evidence-based standards for treatment.
