Sound and Fury
Deaf and hard of hearing youth suffer many of the same psychiatric ailments as their hearing peers; however, practitioners often have little understanding of the cultural/linguistic need of these youth. This documentary, Sound and Fury, follows the Artinisan family as two siblings (one deaf, one hearing) grapple with the decision to obtain cochlear implants for their deaf children. The film is rich with cultural, ethical, and family dynamic issues. Participants gain a greater understanding of deafness from a medical/audiological perspective; technological advancements and their impact on Deaf culture; the distinction between deaf (medical and Deaf (cultural); and the medical, ethical, and psychodynamic implications of cochlear implantation.
