Clinical Case Conference 9 (open)
A Quantum of Solace: Managing the Peer Review

The practicing child and adolescent psychiatrist is likely be in a situation that involves negotiating with a third party for the permission to provide care for a patient. This process may require filling out virtual or paper forms, communicating through the utilization review manager of the facility or agency, and, perhaps, participating in “doc-to-doc” or “peer-to-peer” conversations to convince another physician of a medical necessity that requires continued treatment. This process can be time-consuming and full of contention. CAPs must negotiate effectively for their patient, but many not have training in the important skills needed to do so. This CCC provides attendees with an understanding of the principles related to the peer-to-peer review process and teaches new skills that are effective in the peer-to-peer review process.
