Clinical Case Conference 2 (open)
"Impossible" at School: Consulting on Violent, Disruptive, and Highly Unusual Kids

Each presenter in the CCC is an experienced school consultant that has been asked to give opinions on children and adolescents who pose threats of violence, who disrupt their fellow students and classrooms, or who are so "different" that their schools have trouble accommodating them. Schools want to know if these students pose a threat, and, if so, what kind of threat. Case vignettes are used to show how “impossible” students at school present to a consulting psychiatrist and how the psychiatrist proceeds to handle these children. The three areas of focus are violence, school disruption, and extreme “differentness.” Attendees see how school consultants work with individual cases, understand how school consultations impact school policy, and consider the problem of prediction and prevention when looking at extremes in school behavior.
