Family Movie Night: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: Female Friendships and Adolescent Advancement
The movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants serves as a backdrop to discuss the various challenges that face children as they enter adolescence. The four girls must develop a self-identity that incorporates their sense of sexuality, independence from family, understanding of culture, and loss of their childhood innocence. It illustrates beautifully the process by which the girls navigate the obstacles of maturation through the support system they develop with each other. Attendees gain a fuller understanding of the important role of peer relationships in a teen’s life, and how those relationships may allow for adaption to a teen’s changing body, emotions, and expectations.
