Workshop 48 (ticket)
A Conceptual Framework for Understanding Weight Regulation and Management

Obesity is epidemic in the United States, but successful interventions are lacking. Child and adolescent psychiatrists need to have a better knowledge about its causes to effectively help their patients and families. After a review of the etiological factors associated with obesity, participants learn to use the conceptual paradigm (car model) to understand eating behavior; learn to recognize common genetic obesity syndromes; are familiar with gut/brain signaling of hunger and satiety; understand neurophysiological underpinnings of the metabolic side effects of psychotropic medications; and gain a set of tools to manage obesity in special, at risk populations.
