CPT Update 2013: Strategies for Implementing the New Codes
The Psychiatry section of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) manual was re-written in 2012. The new structure requires psychiatrists to use the standard Evaluation/Management (E/M) codes for medical services; the psychotherapy codes were changed and are now add-on codes. This new structure requires changes in the way psychiatrists bill for their services. Psychiatrists must now itemize services rendered and charge a separate fee for each service. Participants learn how to provide the required documentation for the CPT codes, use E/M codes correctly, understand the risks and consequences of up-coding or down-coding and fraud and abuse, use add-on codes and modifiers appropriately; use the other psychiatry and non-psychiatric codes correctly, and effectively respond to third party payors who refuse to pay for appropriate codes or pay for specific providers.
