Research Institute: What’s Up in Child Addiction Research: A Focus on Methodology

The Research Institute is designed to drive the research policy agenda for child and adolescent psychiatry by creating an environment that encourages scientific exploration and collaboration of investigators across disciplines. The primary audience is researchers, although others are invited to attend.

The overarching aim of this Institute is to provide a higher level of understanding of the methodology of studies of substance use disorder (SUD) research in pediatric and young adult populations. This Research Institute aims to provide information not only on the content of recent research in SUD, but more importantly, to focus on the methodology and accompanying issues in carrying out various substance-related projects. Faculty discuss their own studies with an emphasis on “how to do” SUD-related research. Topics include planning a study, recruitment, retention, outcomes using both subjective and objective measures, definitions of SUD improvement (e.g., reduction vs. remission), study execution, ethical/legal issues, certificates of confidentiality, breaches of confidentiality, working with adolescents/young adults and their families, management of difficult situations (subjects who are intoxicated, etc.), and applicability of studies to clinical practice. All presenters have been asked to start with (a) research study(ies) and to refer back to the study(ies) to keep the talk methodologically informative.
