Clinical Case Conference 13 (open)
The Management of an Adolescent With Anorexia Nervosa and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury
There is good data on how to treat adolescents with eating disorders. What appears less clear is how to treat an adolescent with an eating disorder and comorbid self-injury. This CCC discusses the impact culture has on eating disorders, including eating disorder subculture; the impact of disrupted attachment early in life, how mentalization-based treatment can be used to treat the eating disorder and non-suicidal self-injury, and how to utilize the family and dialectical behavior therapy in the treatment. Also discussed are the medical effects of an eating disorder and the use of body image work to treat an adolescent with an eating disorder and non-suicidal self-injury.
