Advanced Tools for Treating Children in a Family Context: What All Child Psychiatrists Need to Know
Many child psychiatry trainees and practicing child and adolescent psychiatrists have limited exposure to family based treatment in training. Enriched systemic interviewing skills and integration of a family based perspective on assessment and treatment allow practitioners to incorporate the family systems approach into their own diverse practice settings. Participants gain familiarity with a Family Based Integrated-Care (FBIC) paradigm that can be applied across settings and illness categories. This paradigm highlights the importance of family beliefs and relationships to the assessment of presenting symptoms. Demonstration role-play and case scenarios provide an opportunity to acquire experience in interviewing families from this new perspective.
