Two Extraordinary Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists - Models for Excellence: Joseph T. Coyle, MD and Robert Coles, MD

This Media Theater includes videotaped interviews with Professor Joseph T. Coyle, MD, Eben S. Draper Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, Harvard Medical School, and Chief Scientific Officer, McLean Hospital, Belmont, MA and Robert Coles MD, James Agee Professor of Social Ethics at Harvard University.

The conversation portrays aspects of Dr. Coyle’s personal story as he describes his approaches to his own career development: the interplay of serendipity, mentorship, and key friendships at the national and global levels. The conversation encompasses his perspectives on the evolution of child and adolescent psychiatry, the links between evidence-based practice, clinical training, and research, especially with respect to the chronology of the emergence of neurosciences in CAP as a scientific discipline. The interview includes unique insights and reflections on how key concepts and prevailing views were transformed.

Video clips are presented, excerpted from the fourth of four interviews with Dr. Coles. In contrast to the clips derived from the prior three interviews, the clips of the fourth interview focus on Dr. Coles’s descriptions of his conflicted family heritage, the great compatibility and collaboration engaged in by he and his wife, Dr. Coles’s discovery of the similarity of early childhood upbringing that he shared with the pediatrician, writer, and poet William Carlos Williams, and more in-depth discussions of Dr. Coles’s interactions with significant notable others. It is noteworthy that the most recent interview provides a considerably more personal and heartfelt expression of sentiments by Dr. Coles, as he likely “warmed” over time to the experience of the successive interviews.
