Assessing and Managing Risk From Afar: Knowledge of the Campus System of Care as a Tool for the Home Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
Child and adolescent psychiatrists treating adolescents must move patients forward in their readiness for the transition to campus life, and establish treatment and crisis management plans ahead of time. Informed practitioners and prepared patients are both at decreased risk for negative outcomes. Participants learn practice-based strategies to minimize the risk of psychiatric crises in patients transitioning to college; learn about various college or university-based policies, programs, and strategies that identify/monitor/support students as risk; review federal privacy laws as they affect communication with parents and key campus constituents; and learn the value of a public health approach in mitigating risk and preventing suicide and other violence on campus.
