Workshop 24 (ticket)
The Child Psychiatrist as Activist and Advocate: Preparing Asylum Evaluations for Traumatized Immigrants

Child and adolescent psychiatrists benefit from being armed with the tools and language needed to conduct forensic evaluations and help immigrant children seeking asylum make the strongest case possible for protection. The Workshop identifies, describes, and evaluates the variety of presentations of emotional and psychological sequelae characteristic of youth survivors of human rights abuses. Participants develop a greater understanding of the immigration and asylum processes in the United States and receive training on how to conduct forensic evaluations, provide medical-legal documentation, and write a competent affidavit for children and adolescents seeking legal asylum.
