This basic-level introduction of the CPT coding system, and specifically the psychiatry code section, educates early career psychiatrists and child and adolescent trainees in how to utilize codes properly. Billing for services rendered requires the psychiatrist to itemize the services performed and, when third party carriers do not agree to cover the services, negotiate to obtain appropriate coverage for their patients. After learning the basic concepts and actual mechanics of CPT coding, participants become active learners. Vignettes help attendees practice analyzing medical decision-making to determine level of care and the correct code to use, to correctly and efficiently document the services, and to correctly itemize a bill for insurance reimbursement.
