Touchpoints, a term coined by T. Berry Brazelton, M.D., are developmental events in which predictable strides ahead in one area of development are accompanied or preceded by equally predictable temporary regressions or loss of recently acquired skills, often in other developmental lines. Touchpoints, propelled at least in part by rapid bursts of synaptogenesis in shifting neuroanatomical locations, have been observed in both human and nonhuman primates. The meanings that parents make of each developmental progression and regression – or Touchpoint – along with their reactions to it, play a pivotal role in a child’s developmental trajectory. In this Workshop, the speakers introduce key elements, general principles, and unique strategies of the Touchpoints approach for working with multiply-stressed families of young children.
