Workshop 3 (sold out)
Modern Clinical Genetics for Child Psychiatrists

Clinical genetics have become more important to psychiatric practice in the past several years because of advances in genetic research. In the past, the understanding of genetic causes of inherited conditions, and therefore testing for genetic conditions, were limited. Most genetic conditions were diagnosed based on clinical criteria. In recent years, new and more accessible genetic methods, such as fine molecular sequencing for single gene mutation and microarray studies for copy number variants, have allowed for the genetic confirmation of many clinical conditions. By the end of this Workshop participants are able to identify recent advances in clinical genetics that are relevant to child psychiatry, understand how a clinical genetic assessment may assist in the management of patients with neurodevelopmental disabilities or psychiatric disorders, and recognize features in history and physical examinations suggestive of genetic conditions such as Fragile X syndrome, Down syndrome, 22q11 deletion syndrome, and Williams syndrome. Participants also perform a brief assessment for physical features of genetic syndromes and discuss management issues that patients with genetic conditions may present to a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
