This Workshop aims to review current views and evidence around the etiology and epidemiology of teen suicide attempts and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI); consider the issue of engaging teens in treatment; teach the concepts of therapeutic assessment (TA) for teens presenting with suicide attempts and NSSI; and teach participants how to construct a therapeutic assessment diagram in practice. This forms the basis of TA, from which a range of possible “exits” derive. Also discussed is an introduction on how “exits” are created together with the adolescent using a range of evidence-based psychological interventions. Theoretical teaching, films of TA in practice, example scenarios, and small group work are used to communicate the information in this Workshop. By the end of this session participants are competent in constructing TA diagrams and have an understanding of how to derive “exits” from the diagrammatic cycle of maladaptive behaviors.
