This Workshop reviews current clinical perspectives on the differential diagnosis and treatment/management of somatoform disorders, factitious disorders, and malingering. An updated review of evidence-based treatment practices, to the extent available, is presented. The session focuses on relevant
DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for each of the categories noted above and utilizes video illustrations to aid in this process. Topics that are outlined include available treatment modalities as specifically applicable for each, together with caveats requiring adjustments based on the age, intellectual capacities, and educational levels of the patient and participating family members. Treatment strategies for patients with somatoform disorders that are reviewed are psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnosis, pharmacotherapy, and adjunctive use of physical therapy.
